LARGE PAINTINGS

Here is the first large painting I did, the image I decided to use for the large painting was an image I took in an abandoned building, however instead of painting the whole image I decided to zoom in and focus on the brick work and the decomposing surroundings.

For the first large painting I tried to really focus on getting the right shades of colour in and looking at what was really dark and then what was really light, once I had got those block colours in covering the white paper, I then decided to go in with my different materials creating different markings and textures. Some of the materials I used in the first painting included a paint brush, cardboard, a paint roller, mop and also pieces of wood. For example I used the mop to portray some of the plants that started to grow on the walls in my image. Then I decided to use the pieces of wood to actually scrape some of the paint off creating different shades of grey, also reveling some of the paint that was underneath the fresh paint on top leaving a nice texture to my painting.

Here is the second painting I did, I found this second painting a lot more difficult then the first painting because we had to do everything we did in the first painting however the complete opposite, so if there were was a dark section in the first painting that would then become light in the second painting. This applies for the markings we made in the first painting as well for example if the markings were really harsh they would then become really faint in the second painting. My aim for the second painting was to be really dramatic with my markings and completely change what it originally looked like on the first painting, I believe I achieved this by being very expressive with the marks I made for example the curved lines I used, I also decided to be more generous with black paint to make some of the markings more bold. I did find it difficult because you had to keep looking back at your first painting and try not to repeat the same thing you originally did.

Also with the second painting I decided to use different materials to the first painting, the materials I decided to use included a variation of different sponges, different styles of paint brushes I also decided to use a bit of fabric I dipped in paint and then dotted it over the painting creating very bright black and white markings.

Once both the paintings were completed I then had to deconstruct and take apart both the paintings picking out bits that I thought were effective and good. After a while deciding on what sections I wanted to cut out I then started to play around with arranging the pieces.

After arranging some of the pieces together, I realised that it looked to similar to the original painting with the straight edges so I therefore decided to arrange some of the pieces differently drawing myself away from it looking like a square piece of paper. I then decided to cut out some of the negative space behind the swirls and curved markings to try and make them stand out more instead of fading into the rest of the painting.

Here was my final outcome of the large paintings. One thing I really liked and thought was effective was transforming the painting into a different shape instead of having a block square shape. Also really like how most of your attention gets drawn into the middle, this is because I decided to put the detailed pieces in the middle to contrast with the swirls on the outside.
